Ed Harrington

Ed Harrington 1975

Ed Harrington was the last of my "comrades," the very closest of my friends. I first met him during production for Uncle Harry at Southern Connecticut State College, in which his brother John had a small part. But we didn't become close until January 1971, when Ed came in to the poetry readings at The Exit coffeehouse in New Haven. For the next several months, I spent a lot of time at his home in Clinton, Connecticut, until I moved back to DC. Whenever I was in New Haven after that, I spent a lot of time with him and his wife Illyria. Eventually they broke up and Ed moved to California, working as a stucco plasterer before going up the coast to Alaska. Finally he became a truckdriver and one night, in Minnesota or Michigan, he tipped over on a curve and was killed. Of all the poets I've known (and there have been quite a few), Ed was the best, in my opinion.

From J.S. Inlake, March 29, 2007:
"I married Illyria almost 30 years ago and she passed away on Jan 17th. Ironic thing is that Ed died on the same date. Ed and myself had a great relationship and I would always introduce him as my ex-husband in law and best friend. I spent a lot of time with him before he went to Alaska and then when he was on his way back to New England driving a truck that took his future. Not certain why I am sending you this but just felt someone from that crowd should know that the great lady has gone."
    thanks, Jack.
